Balanced flue gas

Flue gas is the mixture of gases which are emitted to the atmosphere through a flue (pipe or a channel, conveying exhaust gases from the combustion area). It is produced by the combustion of different fuels in the industries and power stations etc. The flue gases are generally composed of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, particulate matters and water vapors.

Balanced flue gas fire, basically refers to the closed combustion gas fires, with a glass front, sealing it from the room it is used it. It is ideal for the present generation as it enables us to have a gas fire in the room without the need to have a chimney in the house. It uses twin flue (or pipe), to draw air required for combustion from the outer atmosphere and to provide an exit route for the smoke, and waste gases out of the room. The flue pipes can be horizontal or vertical depending upon the requirements of your house.

Advantages of a balanced flue fire :

  • It suits the requirements of the modern generation as houses with conventional chimneys are almost extinct nowadays.
  • The air for combustion is extracted from outside the room hence not affecting the oxygen levels in the room. The risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is eliminated.
  • It comes with a glass front and hence there is no risk of direct contact with the fire. It is ideal for homes with kids.
  • The smoke and the exhaust is not emitted in the room hence it doesn’t degrade the air in the house.
  • They cut down the cost of ventilation which is necessary with the conventional gas fire, and hence are highly energy efficient.
  • Lesser fuel consumption and higher energy efficiency as compared to the conventional fire.
  • It is safe, good for health ( as there is no emission into the room).

Disadvantages of flue gas fires :

  • The balanced flue gas fire can lead to heat losses if not installed and used properly, defeating the purpose of lighting a fire.
  • The fire is behind the glass front, giving it a virtual feel.
  • High temperatures are generated by the fire .
  • The cost of installation can be high.

Types of flues :

  • Open flue
  • Closed flue
  • Balanced flue
  • Power flue
  • False flue

The balanced flue gas fire system is used in :

  • Fireplaces
  • Stoves
  • Boilers

This type of flue fire is becoming popular amongst the masses because of its closed combustion structure which provides you with all the benefits of a conventional fire while not compromising with the oxygen levels and emissions from the fire.
